A message from our Principal
Donna Burke in front of Bumpus
Dear Parents/Guardians--
Last week, we had our grade-level meetings. During the meetings, I was able to talk with each grade level about this time of year which I refer to as “halftime.” As a former coach and an avid sports fan, I am often amazed at how coaches approach halftime and the changes that are made in the second half of a game. We have one semester behind us and one in front of us. It is time to look at our game plan and make adjustments for the 2nd half of the year.

I think it is important for students, teachers, and parents to reflect on the first semester, and the goals we set at the beginning of the year. The teachers have been reviewing the data of all of their students from the 1st semester in order to make adjustments to their game plan. Each student has a folder and we have added the midyear iReady scores and the 1st semester grades. With this new information, the students will review their data and reflect on the 1st semester. The students have their goal sheets from the beginning of the year and will be reviewing their goals and making new academic and behavioral goals for the 2nd semester. The students will be bringing the folders home with them so parents/guardians can review them together with their children. The folders will need to be returned by next Friday, January 24th.

As we move into 2025, we are all in this together. We have many opportunities for students to get extra help in their classes. Also, please reach out to the teachers if you have any specific questions or would like to set up a parent conference.

EXTRA TIME & ASSISTANCE FOR STUDENTS
ETA stands for Extra Time & Assistance and we offer many different ETA options for our students as well as other options to do school work.

Morning ETA - This is a time before school for students to work independently or to get assistance from teachers.

Lunch ETA (6th graders) - This is a time attached to the lunch period for students to get assistance from their team teachers and a time for students to work independently on homework.

Friday ETA - This is a time for students to work with the assistance from teachers or to make up work that has been assigned during the week.

Working Lunch - Many teams offer working lunch for students to stay in the classroom to work independently on homework or make up any work. Students eat while they work.

Library before school - The library is open before school for students to have time to work independently in a quiet setting.

We want to make sure everyone has an opportunity to get the help they need to be successful in the classroom. In addition to these options at Bumpus, HomeworkAlabama.org is a free resource for students in Alabama. Check it out! https://aplsws2.apls.state.al.us/homework/
From the Principal
REMINDERS:
  • Student phones should be off and in their lockers each day. If a parent/guardian needs to relay an important message to a student, please call 205-439-2200 and we will deliver the message.
  • During afternoon carpool, students should watch closely for parents/guardians. In addition, students should listen carefully to faculty/staff as they give directions for loading cars.
  • Our afternoon carpool lines take between 13-15 minutes. The more families who “carpool”, the faster the line will go. We have had complaints from some neighborhoods regarding cars blocking traffic in the afternoons. Please be considerate of these communities.

BUMPUS BASICS
Reminders for the School Year
Bumpus Carpool
CARPOOL:
  • In order for students to get to class by 8:30am, it would be best for students to be dropped off by 8:25am.
  • If you prefer carpool or do not qualify for a bus, it would be great for families to “carpool” and have more than one student in the car. By doing this we could eliminate the number of cars we have in the lines.
  • If you pick up in the afternoon carpool, it is important to close the big gaps between cars in the line. By closing the gaps, we can be much more efficient in the carpool process.
  • If you do carpool or have other family members pick up your child– please make sure they are aware of how our carpool pick-up works.
WALKERS & BIKE RIDERS
  • Students must stay on the sidewalks when walking to and from school.
  • Students should follow all directions given by our Crossing Guards and our School Resource Officer.
  • Students walking towards Lake Wilburn, should only walk on the sidewalk down Flemming Pkwy. Students should NOT cross Flemming.
  • Students walking towards Green Trails should stay on the sidewalk and only cross the street when directed by the Crossing Guard or our School Resource officer.
  • Students riding bikes should MUST wear bike helmets.
  • Due to the steep hill going down Flemming and the crowded sidewalks, students should walk beside their bikes and not ride down the hill.
  • Students are not allowed to ride scooters to and from school.
BUS RIDERS:
  • Appropriate bus behavior is crucial for the safety of all of our students who ride the bus.
  • Students should remain seated at all times and keep their hands and feet to themselves.
  • In addition, students can use their phones on the bus. However, they do not need to take pictures or videos of people who do not wish to have pictures or videos taken.
  • On the bus, students can listen to music but must use headphones.
Dropping off items
DROPPING OFF ITEMS:
  • Parents can drop off items for students during the day if they forget items.
  • We will not be able to call students down for items such as PE clothes, assignments, sports items. If a student forgets these items, they can come down during the day to check to see if these items have been dropped off.
  • However, we will be able to call students down for lunch money or if they forgot their lunch and need to pick it up.
Water bottles
WATER BOTTLES:
  • Students can have water bottles during the school day, but the bottles need to be clear or translucent. Students can only have water in the bottles. Metal bottles and metal cups are not allowed. In the cafeteria, students can bring and buy drinks other than water.
